The Woodchuck Lodge in Roxbury is a registered National Historic Landmark; it served as the summer home of the country’s most famous natural essayist, John Burroughs, from 1910 to 1921, and was built by Burroughs’ older brother in the early 1860s. Today the home is open for guided tours once every month from May through October. Burroughs’ gravesite is located nearby, adjacent to a large rock where he would play as a child and sit to ponder nature as an adult. Those who sit on the rock often experience a cold spot, believed to be the spirit of John Burroughs still occupying the space he loved in life.
