Hyde Hall

Cooperstown is most famous for being the home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, but it is also the site of another famous building, historic Hyde Hall. Built in the early 1800s by George Clarke, the home was once the largest mansion in the United States. Today it is open to the public for visitation and even special ghost tours.

One of the spirits haunting Hyde Hall is believed to be George Clarke’s wife. After he passed away, Clarke’s eldest son inherited the mansion; upon taking possession of the house, the son immediately threw his mother out. As she left her former home, she vowed to haunt the house from the moment she died forevermore. She evidently lived up to her word, as many guests have reported paranormal experiences in the mansion since her passing. Objects have moved of their own accord in the building, and there have been reports of inexplicable lights flashing brightly at times. Some claim that Hyde Hall is haunted by multiple other ghosts as well.
