Lefferts-Laidlaw House is a two-story registered historic home in Wallabout, Brooklyn. Constructed in 1840 in the Greek Revival style, the house has been rumored to be haunted since a bizarre occurrence that took place in December of 1878. Edward F. Smith, the building’s resident at the time, heard a knock at the door one day, but when he went to answer it no one was there. The knocking returned, and he answered again, but once more there was no one to be seen. According to Smith the knocking persisted and before long the doors and windows began to rattle; frustrated and not sure what else to do, Smith alerted the local authorities. When the police arrived they surrounded the house, and an invisible force threw a brick through the dining room window right before their eyes.
