Merchant's House Museum
New York, NY 10003
The Merchant’s House was occupied by the Tredwell family for nearly 100 years before being converted into a museum in the 1930s. One Tredwell named Gertrude lived her entire life in the home, having been born in an upstairs bedroom in 1840 as the youngest of eight children. Gertrude never married, remaining in the home until her passing in 1933 at the age of 93. Now that the museum is open to the public workers and visitors alike have experienced strange phenomena attributed to the spirit of Gertrude. Odd sounds have been heard, strange smells detected, and some have even seen apparitions. The house is open for candlelight ghost tours throughout much of the year.
