The Parkhurt House at Nye Manor is a stone building built around 1820 for Army Major Jabez Parkhurst—one of six individuals known to have died in the building. Parkhurst died of natural causes, as did one Genevieve Hays. Parkhurst’s first wife, Fidelia, committed suicide in the front upstairs bedroom in 1849, and three of her children are also confirmed to have died at almost within its walls at almost exactly 9 months old. Another daughter, Caroline, is also alleged to have hanged herself in the house shortly after her own child allegedly died there.

A fire ripped through the building in 1993 and twelve years later it was saved from scheduled demolition when it was purchased by Christopher Nye. Since the purchase, Nye has experienced a swathe of paranormal activity. While exploring the house in the dark, a pair of brand new flashlights both went dead at the exact same time in the library. After failing to locate an access point to the basement, Nye left to buy saw so he could cut his way down; upon returning to the still-empty house he found a hatch to the basement propped open by a stick. While working in the empty house around midnight, Christopher once heard the sound of a female voice saying “hello.” His wife, Shannon, says that she feels suddenly saddened whenever she enters the building, and both have heard mysterious footsteps and doors close of their own accord. Neighbors say that before the Nyes moved in they would sometimes see lights coming from the upper floor, even though the house was boarded up and without electricity.

Very much haunted.

I used to live in the house from 1983-86. Things used to happen a lot. A few times I did laundry and would (for example) leave a stack of towels on the dryer downstairs, go upstairs to put some clothes away, only to find the towels still neatly folded and stacked, but on the couch in the front room upstairs. Things like that I attributed to a 'mother' who was simply putting things where they 'belong'. Smaller objects (like pens) would pop up in places they weren't left in. I felt those were kids playing jokes on me. Not scary stuff, from them. But there's a man's presence that I can only describe as 'evil'. Not a nice man. He's the one that walks in heavy shoes/boots around the house causing the sound of doors opening and closing including the doors to the outside, even though they're locked. He usually does his thing when you're in the house alone. And the light thing used to happen too. Go shopping or something, pull up to the house and a light is on upstairs. Go in the house, go upstairs and the light is NOT on. TOTALLY haunted house. I know. I lived it. :)
