The Holcroft House was built in 1822 by John Charlton Clarkson. It was originally named the Mansion House, but was renamed in honor of Elizabeth Holcroft, the mother of Matthew Clarkson who was the first member of his family to come to America. Some believe Elizabeth’s spirit traveled to her namesake house and has been haunting it ever since. Visitors report seeing furniture move by itself and lights turn on by themselves; others have heard footsteps, banging sounds, and a woman crying. A Ouija board was once brought into the building, and it spelled out the name Elizabeth. Today the building operates as the admissions and welcome center for Clarkson College.
