SUNY Potsdam was founded in 1816, making it one of the 50 oldest colleges in the United States. Many have come through the university over the years, but according to local legend one person never left. Dr. Howard Satterlee, the school’s first dean, is said to haunt his namesake building, Satterlee Hall. He has been seen walking the third floor hall and will sometime turn on the clock tower light at night. Students have also seen apparitions and doors slamming shut by themselves in the Knowles basement.

Satterlee Class Orb

I was sitting in a Writing class in Satterlee Hall in 1983, 3rd floor slightly turned toward the teacher Toward the windows, when ball of light, buzzing with energy burst into the room from the back wall, slightly hesitated above the heads of the students (unaware of this event) then the orb zoomed straight out the opposite wall and was gone. I had an audible gasp and looked around expecting some reactions and confirmations that others had seen this bizarre event. But nothing. No one in the room had noticed a thing. I rushed home after class to tel my wife all about this strange ball of light I experienced. In 1984 I had never even heard of a spirit orb, and honestly wondered at the time if I had witnessed a fairy- light . It continued to puzzle me for at least a decade when I saw clips of orbs caught on vis

Satterlee

I am a current student at pdam and last semester I had a class in the graphic design computer lab which is on the third floor but all the way in the back corner by Braner. This was my first class in Satterlee as I’m not an education major. All the time when I left that room in the middle of class I’d see a figure going around the corner or standing by the elevator

Definitely haunted

I went to Potsdam for around a year(2011-2012). I lived in the dorms that was attached to the student union and there is one specific thing that has stuck with me. All the time it would sound like a marble was just rolling off my desk and hitting the ground. I was a bad student, I kept nothing on my desk. I just thought I was going crazy. Then, my neighbor one day was like what do you keep dropping I hear it all the time. I also recall seeing a hooded figure at the end of my bed once. So yep, definitely some spooky vibes there.

Knowles and Satterlee

I graduated from Potsdam 7 years ago. It was quite eerie. I would hang around 3rd floor of Satterlee because my department classes were held there. You'd feel someone while no one was there. I helped a few old friends move in and out of Knowles. It was very creepy in the basement. I felt a presence at one point when left alone there for 10 minutes or so.
