Furman Hall stands on what was once the home of Edgar Allan Poe; most notably, it was the place he lived while revising and ultimately publishing “The Raven.” In 2001 NYU dismantled the former Poe residence to make room for Furman Hall, but it rebuilt the façade to resemble Poe’s residence, established a “Poe Room” dedicated to the author, and kept the original staircase banister. Public celebrations of Poe’s works are held semiannually in the building, and visitors have been shocked to see the ghost of Poe himself climbing the staircase!
