SUNY Geneseo’s Erie Hall, and more specifically dorm room C2D1, was the site of a famous haunting which occurred in 1985. During his stay in the room, an underclassman named Chris began hearing a voice calling out his name. At first he thought the sound was coming from outside his dorm, then that someone was playing a trick on him, but the voice persisted even after he started listening to loud Heavy Metal music on a pair of headphones.
Before long Chris’ roommate began feeling a ghostly presence as well, and both occupants noticed objects moving on their own. Eventually the spirit of a teenage boy would appear before Chris, with his head pulled toward his right shoulder. Chris fled the room screaming, and at this point confided his experiences in another student. His friend thought it would be best to try to document the haunting; he placed an audio recorder in the room, which would turn up a recording of a voice saying “Please help me, help me, please!” Later, Chris’ roommate fled the campus after hearing the ghost boy tell him to “leave Chris alone.”
A local priest was called in to perform an exorcism, which seemed to work until Chris found his friend, Beth, on her dorm floor in a state of shock, the ghost boy having evidently fled his room and appeared in hers. Chris called out the ghost, who appeared before him at this point, and told the spirit that he needed to rest. Chris’ troubles would end after this, but some students say the building is still haunted to this day. A boy named Tommy is believed to have hanged himself on the Geneseo campus, and may be the spirit who haunted Chris.

Just watched your story on the Travel Channel's show My Horror Story. I'm definitely a fan of a good haunting tale and I live quite near the school, so of course I had to Google and see if it was written about elsewhere. You did well conveying your experience. I read your alone review and I'll assume the TV show likes the added details for wow factor, but I appreciate your bravery in confronting the spirit as you did. I assumed it was a death from suicide as soon as the neck was talked about. Hopefully you helped their soul find some peace.

It truly amazes me that - over 30 years later - what happened to my friends and I is still spoken about. It wasn't until around 2010 and 2011 - when the SyFy network, film producers, and others came looking for me (someone had found a detailed copy of notes written by a fellow student, J. Jeff Ungar, during the actual haunting) - that I realized the full extent of the story's spread. Obviously, as with a game of telephone, messages get scrambled, events get exaggerated and details get changed, but I suppose when you throw in nuggets such as Lorraine and Ed Warren (Conjuring, Amityville Horror, etc) visiting, the existence of photographs, a priest blessing the room, audio tapes, and almost a dozen eye witnesses, tales can tend to take on a life of their own. I can verify that we did hear disembodied voices, and see full-bodied apparitions (particularly in room C2D1) and there were a number of physical attacks during the 73 days of the haunting. I try to go back every few years and speak with the students who now live there.
