West Main Street Cemetery
Batavia, NY 14020
Batavia’s original cemetery was plotted along the northern banks of the Tonawanda Creek in 1806. Residents soon realized that the creek would regularly flood, making the cemetery inaccessible; in 1823 it was decided that a new cemetery would be established further from the water and all the existing bodies would be exhumed and relocated. Some believe that the town left a few bodies behind, however, as there have been reports of ghosts in the area. A woman dressed all in gray has been seen numerous times along the north bank where the old West Main Street Cemetery used to be situated.
