Baron Hirsch is a Jewish cemetery in Staten Island which was established by Maurice de Hirsch in the 19th century. Residents of nearby homes say they have encountered spirits who have wandered into their homes, and that shadow figures can sometimes be found in the cemetery. The cemetery also made national headlines in 1960 when a vandal painted “Fuhrer” in yellow in 87 tombstones; the German words for “fatherland” and “death” were also painted on markers bearing Jewish symbols such as the Star of David.

The Lady In White

It was the summer of '63 and skateboarding was a big craze. The boards back then we're nothing like the one's today. The wheels were hard like indoor skates, or steel (made from old clamp - on skates). We couldn't do many tricks; basically just roll down a street on a slope. Baron Hirsch cemetary was a perfect place for that. The cemetary was built on a long sloping hill, and the roads had just been paved.
My buddies and I were around 14-15 years old and lived in Mariners Harbor, a neighborhood not far from the cemetary. Late one afternoon, we decided to go skating at the cemetary. It was off-limits naturally, but that seldom stopped us from doing anything we wanted, anyhow.
We skated for awhile and we're surprised that the caretakers didn't make us leave. It was getting dark, so we decided to make one last run down the steepest road. The road sloped down from east to west and ended by a heavily wooded area. As we careened down the hill, one of my friends bailed off his board and went crashing near a large tombstone, hurting his arm. The rest of us stopped, to see how badly he hurt.
As we approached him, his eyes were wide open and yelling something like, "Over there, over there!" Look, in the woods!" When we turned, we all saw a slender, older looking woman in a flowing white dress, standing at the treeline staring back at us. She wasn't more than 50 feet away and her image appeared to be fading in and out.
Within seconds, we grabbed our boards and tore back up the hill and hurried home. Each questioning the others about what they saw and each confirming that we had all seen the same thing.
When we recounted our harrowing experience to our parents and other neighbors, many of them said she had been sighted by numerous people over the years and had become known as the Lady In White. I never found out who she might have been.
