The Manhattan Well
New York, NY 10012
In 1799, the infamous “Manhattan Murder Well” trial took place after Levi Weeks, a carpenter, was accused of strangling his girlfriend, Gulielma “Elma” Elmore Sands and throwing her body into a well in an area of Manhattan that was then known as “Lispenard Meadow.” Levi was the brother of influential builder Ezra Weeks and was acquitted in a controversial verdict. The remains of the well can be found inside the COS SoHo clothing store on Spring Street. Rumor has it that Elma's ghost has been heard screaming from deep inside the well. Her ghost has also been spotted wandering the streets of SoHo. The Manhattan Well was featured on The Travel Channel's “10 Most Haunted Places in America.”
