St. Bonaventure University
St Bonaventure, NY 14778
Founded in 1858, St. Bonaventure University is a private Catholic university in Cattaraugus County. It is well known for its journalism, business, and education programs, as well as for being haunted. De La Roche Hall is said to be haunted by the spirit of a student who died in a fire; he often turns on the third floor lights late at night. Local legend claims that the student was trying to finish a paper when the fire broke out, and his spirit is still trying to finish his work before morning classes resume. Francis Hall, formerly Christ the King Seminary, is said to be haunted by the spirits of deceased monks.
Rumor has it that in the 1960s students tried to conduct a Black Mass in Devereux Hall. When a staff member found out he quickly put an end to the ceremony, but current students say the group succeeded in bringing evil spirits into the building. Devereux is additionally said to be haunted by a World War I veteran named Willie Cooper, who appears in the back wing where there was once a memorial to the Great War. A ghostly friar has been seen jogging down the halls at night as well.
