The old stone Fort in Schohaire was originally built as a church in 1772, but was quickly converted into a fort at the onset of the American Revolution. It returned to its original purpose for several decades after the war’s end, but in 1844 its congregation split and built separate churches. The State purchased it in 1857, converting into an armory which remained active during the Civil War and through 1873. Before the end of the 19th century, the building was converted into a museum which remains active to this day. With such a long history and strong connection to wartime, it’s no surprise that many visitors claim the Old Stone Fort to be haunted. A woman’s scream has been heard from the tower and an organ is known to play by itself. Some witnesses have even seen an apparition walking through the old fort.
